- Meetings are led by trained facilitators, not clinicians, and are mutual support rather than therapy or treatment.
- Participation is at no cost. No referral or diagnosis is required.
- The approach is secular and science-based, drawing on cognitive behavioural therapy, rational emotive behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness.
- Participants set their own goals. Abstinence is not required.
- SMART covers substances, gambling, and other addictive or concerning behaviours.
- SMART is not a 12-step programme and does not exclude them; many people use both.
- SMART Recovery Canada does not provide crisis services. In Canada, call or text 9-8-8.
