Become a facilitator

Lead a meeting. Help someone find their way forward.

SMART Recovery facilitators create welcoming, science-based spaces where people set their own goals and support one another. You do not need lived experience or a clinical background, just a willingness to learn and to hold space for others. Full, self-paced training prepares you for the role.

The role

What facilitators do

Facilitators guide respectful, structured discussions using the SMART Recovery approach, and help keep meetings focused, supportive, and inclusive. They do not provide counselling, treatment, or clinical advice.

  • Lead online or in-person SMART Recovery meetings.
  • Support group discussions using SMART tools and principles.
  • Follow facilitator policies, meeting guidelines, and ethical standards.
  • Help keep meetings safe, respectful, and welcoming for everyone.

Training

How you will prepare

Facilitators complete SMART Recovery training before leading meetings. Each course is self-paced, and the training covers everything you need to start with confidence.

  • The SMART Recovery approach and its core tools.
  • Group facilitation skills and meeting structure.
  • Roles, boundaries, and what is expected of a facilitator.

Before you train, we ask that you attend at least 10 SMART Recovery meetings, so you experience the program first-hand.
